Know your rights and duties as a taxpayer

Plain-language explainers, myths and facts, a statutory due-date calendar and a checklist to help you avoid penalties.

Jargon-free explainers

What is the AIS and why should I check it?

The Annual Information Statement on incometax.gov.in shows what the tax department already knows about you: salary, interest, dividends, share and mutual fund sales, property purchases, high-value spending and TDS. Before filing your return, open it and make sure every item is either included in your return or, if wrong, flagged through the feedback option. Most notices today begin with a mismatch between the AIS and the return.

Do I need to file a return if my tax is nil?

Often yes. Filing is required when your gross income before deductions exceeds the basic exemption limit of your regime (Rs. 4 lakh under the new regime), even if the Rs. 60,000 rebate brings tax to nil. Filing is also compulsory in specified cases, such as depositing more than Rs. 1 crore in current accounts, spending more than Rs. 2 lakh on foreign travel or more than Rs. 1 lakh on electricity in a year, regardless of income.

Is that GST bill genuine?

Every registered supplier must print a 15-character GSTIN on the invoice. Open gst.gov.in, choose Search Taxpayer, and enter the GSTIN. If the business is not found, is cancelled, or the name differs, ask for clarification. An unregistered person cannot collect GST from you. For restaurants and shops, the rate charged should match the current notified rate for that item.

Cash rules that surprise people

No one may receive Rs. 2 lakh or more in cash from a person in a day, for a single transaction or for one event (Section 269ST); the penalty equals the amount received. Loans and deposits of Rs. 20,000 or more must not be taken or repaid in cash (Sections 269SS and 269T). Businesses lose the deduction for cash expenses above Rs. 10,000 to a person in a day (Section 40A(3)).

Gifts and taxes

Gifts from specified relatives (spouse, siblings, parents, children and their spouses, and others defined in law) and gifts on marriage or by inheritance are not taxed. Gifts from others are taxable in the receiver's hands if the total exceeds Rs. 50,000 in a year (Section 56(2)(x)), and then the entire amount is taxable, not just the excess.

Your salary slip and the new labour law

Under the Labour Codes in force from 21 November 2025, every employee must get an appointment letter, monthly wages must be paid by the 7th of the next month, and full and final settlement must be completed within two working days of leaving. If allowances make up more than half your pay, part of them counts as wages for PF and gratuity.

Statutory due-date calendar

Dates shown are statutory due dates. When a due date falls on a holiday or the Government extends it, the notified date applies. Always confirm on the official portal.

    Frequently asked questions

I received an income tax notice by email. Is it genuine?
Genuine notices carry a Document Identification Number (DIN) and appear under Pending Actions on incometax.gov.in after you log in. Never click payment links in messages. Verify the DIN using the "Authenticate notice" service on the portal before responding.
What happens if my PAN is not linked to Aadhaar?
An unlinked PAN becomes inoperative. TDS and TCS are then applied at higher rates and refunds are withheld. You can link it on the e-filing portal after paying the prescribed fee, and the PAN becomes operative again after linking.
I missed the return due date. What can I do?
You can file a belated return by 31 December following the year with a late fee of Rs. 5,000 (Rs. 1,000 if income is up to Rs. 5 lakh) and interest on any unpaid tax. After that, an updated return (ITR-U) can be filed within the extended window, with additional tax that rises with time.
Do I have to report foreign assets?
Residents must disclose foreign bank accounts, shares, property and other assets in Schedule FA of the return, even if they generate no income. Non-disclosure can attract penalties under the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015, with relief introduced for small balances.
